The Most Secret Place on Earth: A film by Marc Eberle
..... But first, Who Killed Chea Vichea? film banned in Cambodia... review by The Huffington Post .....
I first saw Marc Eberle's film about Laos about 3 years ago, a preview Marc gave me of the short and long version (maybe to convince me that he's for real, in wanting to do a film on me and the Khmer Rouge Tribunal), which immediately, powerfully captivated and evoked visceral reactions of disbelief, disgust, anger by the images and the story -- a story so extraordinary for its secrecy and the secrecy's duration, its profound disregard for the Laotian people and their suffering and destruction, a story with its countless parallels to Cambodia. I have watched this film many times since, the most recent at Ambassador and Mrs. Frank Mann's residence with a small group of diplomats and friends.
It's a brilliant, brave, mesmerizing film which deserves all the nominations and awards that it is currently collecting! ..... Marc Eberle has visited Cambodia regularly for the past 8 years and has been based in the country since 2008. In 2003 and 2004 he helped to set up Cambodia’s new private TV station, CTN, as producer, director, production manager and coach of the local staff.
Marc Eberle has previously directed award-winning documentaries for ARTE, Discovery Channel, NDR, WDR, SWR, BR, MDR and ZDF in Oman, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. He holds an MA in Film and TV from Royal Holloway, University of London.
His latest documentary, The most secret place on earth – The CIA’s covert war in Laos (NDR/ARTE, WDR, Filmfund Hamburg, Filmfund NRW, MEDIA new Talents, MEDIA, developed in the framework of the Discovery Masterschool,) was screened at ten international film festivals and in German cinemas early 2009 and was nominated for the Golden Panda at Sichuan intl. Film Festival, China, the History Makers’ Award, New York, the Banff World Television Award, Canada, and the North German Film Award.
